With the deadline for voting in the ICA election approaching (June 15), I thought I would post a brief personal endorsement for Eddy Vanoosthuyse, who is running for ICA president.
I am just wrapping up a year of post-doctoral studies with Eddy at the Royal Ghent Conservatory in Belgium, and I consider him a great match for this leadership role. He is boundlessly energetic, has years of international experience, and is a gifted player, teacher, conductor, and administrator. Besides teaching in Ghent and Leuven, he is principal clarinet of the Brussels Philharmonic, a recording soloist, and founder and conductor of the International Clarinets. Importantly for this election, Eddy is enthusiastic about drawing more members and more ideas into the ICA. Studying with Eddy this year has opened up my own perspective on music and the clarinet, and I think that the ICA will benefit from his breadth of vision. If I am not mistaken, the ICA presidency has never rested outside of the United States, so Eddy would certainly provide fresh direction for the organization in terms of deeper internationalization. He is a first-rate musician (evidenced by his uncanny score reading and solfege abilities), and he is as passionate about the clarinet as anyone I have ever met. Eddy is really a "can do" individual, and he would make a dynamic president.
