What would happen if I play Vandoren M13 Lyre mouthpiece with a traditional Vandoren reed str. 3?
Author: kjSean

http://www.vandoren.com/en/serie13.html
The diagram says that M13 Lyre is for 3 1/2 -> 4 for Traditional Vandoren reeds.

What would happen if I play with a 3? Will it be okay?

Thanks!

In my (limited) experience what Vandoren say in their publicity about what reeds suit which mouthpieces is fantasy and irrelevant.

Just try a few and see what works for you.

I use a VD M15 which says on the box that it plays Trad 3.5/4/5, V12 4/4.5/5. I play Trad 3, V12 3, Rico GCSTB 3 and Alexander Classique 3 in it and it's right for me. I tried a 4 and it was impossible for me and even a 3.5 was a struggle.

It will work just fine. The Vandoren chart is a guide for best performance, but most mouthpieces will work outside the listed values. As its a mouthpiece intended for harder reeds I wouldn't want to go much under your 3 to still get good performance.

The best and only way to find out what happens if you try something is to try it!
You can try any reed with any mouthpiece and learn what is best for you.

Ditto what others have said, but in my experiences playing the M13Lyre, I have found the 3 1/2 blue box to be the optimal reed.

I play the M13 Lyre with strength 3 Traditional Vandoren reeds. My professor also uses this combination. I think this is what Burt Hara of the MN Orchestra uses...so I'd say that that combination is just fine. =)

Guidelines are just that, guidelines. Lots of car dealers sell four-wheel-drive vehicles designed for off-road use. 90%+ of them never leave the pavement, but that does not mean they don't satisfy the owner's needs/wants. Use what works for YOU.

Mark, I think you are mistaken. The big risk is head implosion.

I believe Burt Hara plays 3 1\2's and 4's.

Every molecule in your body would come to a screeching halt. That would be a bad thing. Tom
