 Schoenberg

In a few weeks, I'll be doing the Schoenberg Five Pieces in an arrangement for 11 players by Felix Greissle. The part I was given is Clarinet in C. I was going to do it on a C clarinet but it goes below the range. Transposing on Bb clarinet doesn't work either because it goes to a low C#. The original Five Pieces for large orchestra by Schoenberg is scored for Clarinets in A and it looks like that's what this arrangement is intended to be played on.

I've been trying to track down a Clarinet in A part but so far have had no luck. (this arrangement is only available as a rental) Anyone have a transposed part or know where I might be able to obtain one?

Thanks,

Tilly

Have you tried contacting the arranger or the publisher?

Transpose it yourself. That way, you don't have to get anyones (publisher, arranger, composer, etc) permission as long as you don't "tell" or try to sell, and it's just good for you. Do it either by sight--transposing from the original part--or by writting it out by computor or hand. C to A transposition is only a minor third up. Ex. to play a written C for "C" clarinet, play an Eb on your A. Or, if your really clever, read the C clarinet part in bass clef on your A and add three flats. Ex. the written treble clef C is an Eb in bass clef after adding the flats to the key sig. But since it's Mr S, perhaps writting the whole thing out would be easiest if your not really adept at sight transposition.

Schoenberg was, shall we say, a bit hazy about the clarinet's range. In his Variations for Band, the clarinet parts go to low Eb and, as I recall, once to low D. (Somebody correct me on this.)

Schoenberg frequently wrote his scores with all instruments in C. I once tried to play his Serenade-a septet for 3 clarinets, 3 strings and piano. Eb, A, and Bass Cl. were all notated in C pn the score.

Actually, Suite, Op 29; a masterpiece iMO, not often played because of its difficulty.

the orchestra version we did her last semester at USF had contrabass in A bass clef. That was a fun time. Does your arrangement have a contra in A as well?

Thanks for your responses.

Yes, the rental company has been contacted and are still working on it. No, I have not contacted the arranger......he died about 28 yrs. ago!

To William...I frequently transpose at sight but as this is on A clarinet from a C part and difficult atonal music with lots of accidentals, it's a bit more challenging. The other repertoire on this concert is even more difficult so I'm just trying to give myself a fighting chance!!

It was not Schoenberg who created this C clarinet part that goes below the range.....this is an arrangement by Greissle. As far as I know, there is no contra in A bass clef part in this arrangement (pheew...glad I wasn't given that!) There is a horn part also in C, though.

Since first posting this topic, I've downloaded the clarinet 1 & 2 parts (in A) of Schoenberg's original Five Pieces which are very similar to the Greissle arrangement. Between the two parts and a bit of additional material, I think I can create a cut/paste transposed version without too much difficulty.

If an A clarinet part for this piece materializes, I'll let you know.
