Spencer -

You have every right to be proud of your accomplishment. I have known several who have tried and did not make it as young as you are. Most of the time is is the older players who make it because of their experience and maturity. It sounds like you have a good thing going there. I don't know if you are studying privately or not, but if you aren't, it would be a good thing if you would consider the possibility of finding a private instructor and begin some serious work with them as it sounds like you have potential. I know that the All State Band tryout material in Texas is ROUGH!!!! Those who make it here have really done something.

Congratulations to you for a job well done.

Ours in Hawaii were selections from the music that they were to be playing for the concert a week later, and also the pieces that they would play. At the audition, the judges would choose any passages from the songs. For last year's high school one, the pieces were Symphony no. 2 op. 30 ("Romantic"), Howard Hanson, arr. McBeth, Babi Yar - From the Holocaust Suite by Morton Gould, Circus Pastiche by Barnhouse/Seredy/King, and Of Sailors and Whales (Five Scenes from Meville) by McBeth (we had the opportunity for W. Francis McBeth to conduct last year). The year's before was The Divine Comedy (I-IV) by Robert Smith, Fanfare and Flourishes by James Curnow, Rolling Thunder by Henry Fillmore, and Wedding Dance by Jacques Press. Although the music isn't as advanced as many of the pieces concert bands work on here because the select band only has a week to rehearse, they are still pretty hard.

That's awesome! Keep up the good work! All-State auditions are tough. In CT, this years piece was by Persichetti. I don't know where they come up with that type of music!

Good luck and be proud of your achievement.

I know what you mean, My daughter brought her try out etudes home for Texas 3-A compitition. I just had to try it and I really embarassed myself. I bet I spent a good 30 minutes on a couple measures and still got tangled fingers. She had a good laugh and this just frustrated me more.

I know that Illinois rotates All-State (actually combined with District Honor band auditions) music for clarinet amongst 6 etudes from C.Rose 32 Etudes Studies. It's two one year, two more the next, and the final two the next, then they begin at the beginning again. Also all arpeggios and scales. Congrats on making it! I tried for three years and finally made District band last year and it was a great experience! Have a great time!! :)
