Guy at the local music shop is trying to get me to try a Portnoy mouthpiece. I've seen the name a few times in some of the chat rooms, but have yet had an opportunity to get my clarinet over and give it a try. Anyone have any info to share on them? I'm currently playing an R-13 with a Selmer Crystal with a 3 facing and wonder if the Portnoy 3 is equivalent? Thanks for any and all comments.

John I don't believe that you want equivalent. I would want something better or easier to play then the currect mp. I have M. Lurie Crystal and I can only use a certain reed with it and it is a lot heavier then my hard rubber ones. See if the store will let you try it at home for a couple of days.

Like Bob said, can you try a couple on loan to compare with the Portnoy?
Everybody has a different set of chops, so finding a good match requires trials.
Although they have some Quality control problems, I use a Vandy M13 as my reference. I think the M13 was developed with the R13 in mind. It's a nice, even tempered player, right down the middle of the road.

I have both a Portnoy 3 and a Selmer crystal with the 3 facing. They (at least to me) are not really similar at all. The Selmer crystal tends to deliver a slightly darker sound than the Portnoy BP03, but that is just for me. My own experience has also been that the Portnoy seems to play very differently on different clarinets, though it is a mystery to me why this might be. I could be my imagination or that I am just sensitive to it. I should also add that I have never played either of them on an R13. I have only played them on Selmers.
The best result I ever got on an R13 was on a Blayman that originally had an E facing that Herb Blayman had refaced to an B facing (or it may have been the other way around - it was about 23 years ago) but I found it to be a terrific mouthpiece for the R13. It played so well and was so responsive that I almost decided to buy an R13, and I am NO fan of R13s. You may want to try one of them if you can find one. I heard that he is retiring so it may no longer be possible to get them. A lot of my friends in High School were students of his and so his mouthpieces were widely used by all of us; but I digress...
Anyway,I would not expect the BP03 facing on the Portnoy to be very similar to the Selmer crystal 3 facing. You may find the Portnoy easier to control though and it can be a very nice mouthpiece and very responsive as well.
