Today I saw a Selmer (old metal "silver") clarinet. I had never before seen what appeared to be standard equipment .... a tuning barrel. (This is probably not the first one I've seen, just the first one I have *noticed*).
I have a Bradley tuning barrel and had one of the Click International barrels some time back. This one looked like it was very easy to work with. mw

M W, Let's hope it was a better design than the Bettoney [helically threaded] barrel provided with the old SilvaBet, one of the best metal cl's, but prob. with lack of lubrication, it would "freeze up". It's design is shown in H B's patent, # available! Any experience with these, John B? and others? Don

All I can tell you is that most of them tend to leak air. I have to "pack" them with cork grease to seal (ala the old Conn adjustable tuning neck on the saxes, which are hell to get off because the *_*_ set screws are usually rusted so bad!) Having said that I don't know if the Selmer is of the same design. I've never worked on the Selmer metal clarinet, although I hear that they are fine instruments. I think that Ira Uhrig could give you more information as he used to play one if my memory serves me correctly. ( iju99@aol.com )

Could you tell me more about the specific design? Is it a threaded type of adjustment like the Conn sax and Bettoney clarinet?

John, the instrument is on eBay. "Selmer" "Clarinet" "Silver" ... those key words will get it. I (purposely) didn't list the auction here due to the Sneezy rules. This may or may not be correct, but since we had someone who recently posted info about two eBay auctions and those actions weren't permitted, I felt inclined to tread lightly. mw
((Mark any comments are welcome --- how do we go about discussing an instrument design when their on photos on eBay? Thanks for any guidance.))

I just took a look at the picture and I believe it to be a screw type device similar to the Bettoney. BTW I just bought an old Bettoney metal, full Boehm, at a pawn shop this afternoon. I don't buy metal clarinets but this is a full Boehm and has the tunable barrel, so I bought it mainly to study the mechanism and thought I could probably get the little money I paid for it back. (After I fix it up you'll probably see it on eBay.) At initial view it is like the old Conn sax tunable neck. You twist the barrel and the mouthpiece socket is threaded so that it moves up and down (or back and forth depending on the perspective). One thing I haven't figured out yet is how it comes apart. It does not have any set screws to take the tuning ring off. Well, I just figured it out. It just unscrews completly. There are four posts that engage in the barrel so the unit can be move in and out as you spin the threads. I would be interested in seeing the Selmer up close. This design looks much better than the Conn sax design. I don't see it leaking. at all. A curious thing about this clarinet iss that it has "Cyril Adams" enbraved in the bell under the Bettoney logo. My question is this the former owner's name that he had engraved in the bell or is this a particular model? Maybe I should start another thread.
