I don't think any of them played clarinet. As far as instruments go, the clarinet is a fairly new invention. I don't believe the clarinet was even around when they were believed in. The god of music (Hermes), would have played some form of a simple flute or a lyre, not a clarinet. If I knew more about why you were asking perhaps I could tell you more, I'm in Mythology and Latin, I'm a fountain of knowledge on this topic.

Wouldn't they need a different one for each mode?

I'm also into Mythology and the ancient greeks (Im greek also). The greeks gods would have loved the Clarinet!

Zeus: Soprano
Hermes: Alto
Persyten: Tenor
Haidies: Bass

Couldn't you just imagine!?!? (Excuse the spelling)

Hi,
Sorry I was so confusing. If the Greek Gods were a Reality of Today which form of clarinet would they play???

Probably a better question would be Do Greek Clarinetists use German or Boehm and do they use Bb, A, C, Eb G, etc... clarinets for traditional music.

Thanks

Graham

PS I need info for fake advertisements ussing Greek Gods sponsoring my favorite thing. ( for me that is the clarinet)

Graham, I think that it a good idea for your advertisements would be to take the Greek gods, and put them into a big band setting, tuxedos and all. Try to create the look of Benny Goodman orchestra, yet making the difference obvious. Keep any wings, head dress, winged sandels, and other distinguishing characteristics. A clever spoof if you may. You could be accurate even down to the bass drum head with the B and G with the clarinet in between them. Keep the clarinet logo and put Greek letters in instead. I'll let you decide what Greek gods play what instruments. Bachhus would make an excellent trumpet player if I do say so myself, hee hee. -- Nate Zeien

Maybe they could bring Thor and his mighty hammer down from up north for the percussionist.

Isn't Apollo the god of music?...He played the lyre and his son Orpheus was the greatest human musician of his time...Many things have been written about Orpheus and his underworld travels...Apollo the god of music would want to play the clarinet if he were alive today...

In ancient Greece, woodwinds were considered somehow extatic, belonging to the realm of Dionysos. They played "aulos", a double-reed thing, some kind of shawm or oboe. They were always played in pairs. A decent, olympian god would hardly ever want to be seen with a woodwind. Athena once tried (she actually invented it!), but threw them away, because she thought that it deformed her pretty face. The horns was then picked up by the satyr Marsyas, who challenged Apollo in a contest. Apollo, playing the lyre as always, won, and poor Marsyas was flayed alive.
In Plato's ideal, utopian state, woodwinds were to be completely banned. Only strings should be allowed! Fortunately, it was never realised (probably not even meant to be), and nowadays, Greece is full of clarinet players. Great ones, in fact! They almost exclusively seem to stick to the Albert system, so if the gods came down from Mount Olympus and decided to reconsider woodwinds, that would probably be what they found.

You gotta remmember, some of those woodwinds in those days were not played with the mouth, but through the nose. Some had a leather harness to hold it against your face/nose to free the fingers for the tone ports as they were played in pairs. Must have been real messy during cold season.
