 Plastic v. H-Rubber Mouthpieces

Is there an easy method for determining whether that mouthpiece is hard rubber or plastic ? Yes, in fact its really quite simple.

1. Take some high #'d-Grit Sandpaper (lets say 400grit & up).
2. Cut a small piece of (fresh, unused) sandpaper.
3. Lightly "scratch" the (bottom of the) Tenon with the Sandpaper.

A brown or black residue on the sandpaper indicates hard rubber; a "whitish" residue & you've got Plastic.

PS in my experience testing, when you take a swipe of the Tenon quickly smell the sandpaper. it will smell rather foul. the plastic swipe has NO smell.

hi,
you can smell the difference every time you clean and dry the mp. in most cases you can feel and see the difference as well.

many times you can't tell the difference on feel or sight. in fact, I know of some brands that you can put side-by-side & you'll be baffled. on the other hand, a zinner blank IS obvious to me.

how are you cleaning the mouthpiece before you semll it? I would presume you would not use HOT water, right?

interesting.

hi,
in fact all my hard rubber mps are based on zinner blanks (actually with Viotto G3 facings) . Of course i don't cook them. i use cold water then dry them carefully, nothing else.

I suppose it would be mean to tell a someone the way to tell the difference between mouthpieces is to drop them, and that the hard rubber will bounce... You could say that crysal has a nice ring when you drop it as well... Nah, that's just too mean. Don't ever try this method. You will likely chip, break, or completely shatter your mouthpieces. Crystal mouthpieces, when dropped, will shatter instantly. I haven't ever dropped mine, and I don't plan to either. -- Nate Zeien

Thomas, I agree that when you hold a Zinner blank the "feel & weight" will tell you its made of hard-rubber material. I have been collecting mouthpieces & have run into some odd-ball stuff. mw

Hot Joe, I would like to make a few comments. First of all, you are certainly welcome here, don't get me wrong. Although Mark W's reply may seem somewhat unfriendly, I would have to look back at a couple of yours.
>WHo is tthis mark weinstein guy? He sounds so picky and stubborn
>
>What kinda name is cyrstal obrien? Don't you mean Obrien Crystal mouthpieces....
>I'm on to u! u better lock your doors, cuz i kno where you live! hehe
Frankly, after insulting him, the comment about locking doors, and then asking for a bio from him, I don't blame him for not being so willing to give out personal information. Although some of us may be more lighthearted than others, there are still some of us who very much take this seriously. I personally try to find a good balance in between, and generally try not to offend anyone. And also, I can tell you a little bit about Mark W. He is a frequent poster here, and is quite knowledgeable in what he talks about, and is from all my experience, very polite about matters as well. I would ask that you just try to be polite and considerate of others. A couple of reasons I might hesitate to participate in discussion with you are because of comments that could be percieved as threats, and violating board etiquette. Keep in mind that Mark Charette is the Webmaster here, and his say is final. I hope that you continue to post, just in a more polite and respectful manner. Thank you. -- Nate Zeien

Hi Mark,
Mr. Viotto is in Germany a very famous mp-maker. A lot of professionals use his mps. At the
moment there is the facing G3 popular. It is open a little more than 1 mm. I love this facing
because of the sound quality and the excellent response and playability. I use this facing on
German system and on my Boehm clarinet. You can get Viotto facings on Zinner blanks via http://www.olivacr.com/. I use Vandoren white Master for these mps (you could also use V12).
Yesterday I received reeds from Willscher which match extremely good this mp and have
a very good quality and consistence (much better than Vandoren). I heard that in USA
some famous people also own Viotto-mps.
