 Metal Holton?

Has anyone had the oppritunity to own or play on a metal Holton Collegiate? I only ask because I've been led to believe that they have a reputation of being worth little as a clarinet, but the best lamp one can buy. Is this true? What is it like comparitively to other metal clarinets?

It's true that they're worth little in terms of dollar value. I have some old Holton catalogues. The Collegiates (which were also made in wood) were marketed as student instruments between the 1930s (possibly earlier) and 1950s. I think the name "Collegiate" indicates an intent to sell to much younger students, beginners, who wanted to feel "adult" with a model name suggesting older kids. I've seen several metal Collegiates at flea markets. They're soldily constructed, not flimsy and junky like many of the other metal student clarinets, but they're not pro quality. The outdoor flea market dealers generally make no distinction between good metal clarinets and crummy ones, and sell all of them for anywhere between $30 to about $100. I would recommend paying less than $50 for a Collegiate because they're very common. The price assumes the clarinet would need a complete overhaul with corks and pads. I hate to see a usable clarinet made into a lamp. My 2 cents....

I have a Holton Collegiate that is gold laquered (like a sax) with chrome keys. Although its beauti ful to look at, it doesn't sound as good as my Elkhart. This may be due to the mouth piece. I've found that metal clarinets need the right mouth piece so do some experimenting. The best MPc I found for my Elkhart was an old white plastic Rene Dumont til it got broken. I use a 2RV on it now. A freind of mine uses an older crystal MPc on his and plays it proffessionaly in his jazz band.

My Regent Soloist came with a Hite Premier mouthpiece. It sounds okay. The socket in the metal "barrel" is smaller than my plastic Yamaha clarinet, so I can't swap mouthpieces.
