 New composite material for clarinets?
Author: tictactux 2017

We all know that ABS, Resonite, Bakelite, Greenline, Hard Rubber etc are used in the production of clarinets. I read an article in the paper today that a shoe manufacturer started producing heels from a (relatively) new wood-derivate composite, Arboform.

http://www.tecnaro.de/english/arboform.htm

Looks like the material can be treated like other thermoplasts. Sounds interesting, and I wonder if someone tried to build an instrument with it.

I tried to get more info from your link and failed. Two important factors are mterial density [sp gr] and machinability. It should be tried, who knows, it mught darken our tones .. Should be cheaper than grenadilla ! TKS, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Don't know how it works, but I can guarantee that if someone does figure out a machining process for it, it'll be sure to make our sound, "Darker and warmer" and probably be able to "focus our sound, yet produce unparalleled flexibility" or some mumbo jumbo like that.

With regard to previous posts, and the trend towards re-cycling, should we not be making clarinets out of old table lamp bases?....... H n' P.

TKS, Ben [ttt]. the Arboform Abstract , in English, was very interesting, tho brief . Out an abundance of tech curiiosity, I may do a bit of looking to see "whats been done out there".If significant [to me] will report. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

...maybe someone wants to start with a mouthpiece. Injection-moldable, just like the ubiquitous acrylic beaks...
