check a travel website like <www.Orbitz.com> or <www.Travelocity.com>

That will get you the most accurate answers. Book now and you'll save more money than waiting.

Booking a flight now may or may not be the best course of action, though I wouldn't wait until later than a few months before the event. Plane ticket prices are a fickle beast, and can go up or down on a whim. Tickets to Hawaii were in the $200 range this year, $800 last year.

Janlynn,

You should budget about $16,000 US. This is your chance to buy beautifully selected and set-up clarinet, barrels, bells, mouthpieces and sheet music.

Oh, you'll probably also want to eat, so bring along money for that.

And bring sleeping pills --as there are usually 2-1/2 things going on at the same time, and you won't want to miss anything. The classes, master classes, equipment trial rooms, recitals, competitions, ... start early morning and continue past 10PM.

To avoid missing anything, you'll want to stay on campus; so don't try to save money by looking for cheaper digs --it is not a good value compared to being immersed in the action.

I hope you do make it; it is really, really worthwhile.

The one clarinet fest I went to had a wide range of discounts depending on the vendor. The minimum I remember was normal price, but tax free- other booths had 10-20% discounts. Instruments and accessories (mouthpiece, barrels, reeds, etc) were generally, but not always, the least discounted and sheet music was generally more discounted.
In any case, you will always get a better price than the normal retail+tax+shipping price. Also, it gives you the chance to try different products side-by-side.
So the amount you save really depends on what you want to buy. Thus, I think Bob's suggestion of $16,000 is a little on the low side ;) , but to each their own.

It takes quite a while to try instruments to compare, etc., though ClarFest is a great place to try various makes/models and see what you like and don't like.

The dorm rates tend to be very good, though it's college living - fun but not for me.

OH,
and, importantly:

If you are going to show your face in the instrument demo area, be sure you come armed with some really zorchy cadenzas memorized and fluent under your fingers.

Those from Capriccio Espagnol are minimal.

Also, your loudest mouthpiece.

was my question stupid? why am i not getting any serious answers? I can look up airfares. I'm not interested in buying a new clarinet.

I dont make enough money to keep a savings so this is going to be very difficult for me. I dont know if were talking $500, $1000, $2000 for this trip. So I dont know what the least amount I can contribute to this fund on a weekly basis.

can someone PLEASE give me a general idea?

I don't think it's a dumb question. There's some basic information missing from the ICA website like how much it costs to get in and whether all events are included in the price of admission.

I was thinking about going next year myself, since it's going to be in my home state (and at my alma mater--well, one of them, anyway--I went to the law school across the street from the music school), but I have no idea how much it costs to go, either. I don't care about buying stuff, either, (except maybe some reeds and sheet music)--all I care about is masterclasses, performances, and the like. I'm not a member of ICA and have never been to a ClarinetFest, either, so like Janlynn, I have no clue what to expect. (Of course, if all anybody really does at these things is buy equipment maybe I'm better off just staying home.)

On this page ICA lists the Clarinetfest chairs for next year. You might want to contact them and ask if they have projected costs for admission, rooms, etc. There are e-mail links on that page.

personally, I would budget a few hundred bucks above and beyond the costs of admission, room, travel and meals. You never know what must-haves you will find there.

I can't give a specific dollar amount, as there are not currently published costs. If at all possible,I would set aside at least $100 a month, beginning now. That way, you will have some money available. I am assuming you won't be buying clarinets, bells, barrels, etc. Even so, you never know what you might find there thet you will fel you can't possibly do without.

The registration for ClarinetFest is only around $150 (at least that's what it has been every time I've gone) plus ICA membership which is another $50. So that's not bad at all. The main expense is the airfare and the lodging. If you stay in a dorm (and especially if you share a dorm with a friend) you can get by pretty cheap. A lot depends on how much you spend while you are there. If staying in a dorm and not planning to buy much while there, I'd probably figure a minimum of $2000 for airfare, registration, lodging, food, and maybe a little spending money for sheet music, CD's, etc...of course it never hurts to save extra, then if you don't need it you'll have money in the bank.

No, it wasn't a dumb question but it's difficult to give you a serious answer because you don't know yet how much a room will cost and how much you need for food. Even though you may not want to buy anything it is difficult, though not impossible, not to spend some money because of all the items for sale. There's so much good stuff to try so the temptations are great. Mouthpieces, barrels, music, reeds, gadgets, clarinets, cases, books etc. If you really need an idea look at some past clarinetfests held in the USA and see what the average cost of a room was and than figure out what you're budget can be for food. Then I suggest saving at least something to buy what you may want. Sure not a new clarinet, but you may be tempted to get something. Just save what you can and live off of your budget. ESP
