I am in the process of possibly purchasing an RC Prestige Bb clarinet. Is it just the barrel length that makes the 442 pitch and how do they compare to an R13 pitched at 440? Any info would be appreciated. thanks....Avie

You can also pull the middle joint a little to get a more even intonation on all notes.
I do this with my RC's (not Prestiges). On the RC Bb I even pull out the bell a mm to lower B4.

You have to remember that if the clarinet throat tones are in tune with the shorter barrel they will need to be played differently or adjusted with the longer barrel. The best thing to do is take a tuner with you and try several. You should try several models as well, they all have a different bore, key placements etc. Remember too, different clarinets may tune differently with different mouthpiece and the way people voice. Locally it is usual to play 440, 441, or 442 (depending on situation). Pianos are usually tuned to 440. Local clarinet players use both R13 model (American) but I know a few who use the European models (some even bought in Europe). It is not a problem.

Hi,
I've a RC clarinet with serial number with a F letter and barrel of 65 mm lenght, it's the model for european market and it's tuned at 442 Hz.
A friend of mine have the same clarinet model with the serial number without the F letter, with a barrel lenght of 66mm it's tuned to a 440 Hz.
The age of these two clarinets it's the same more or less looking the serial numbers and they instruments look to be identical.
We have made a several experiment swapping the barrel and the intonation between the instruments, and subsequently we have bought two RC barrels of lenght 66 mm for me in order to play at 440 Hz and 65 mm for my friend in order to play at 442 Hz.

I have an RC full-boehm clarinet with an F prefix and I use a Backun 64 mm barrel for excellent intonation. I have always had a tendency to play flat and this combination allows me to use softer reeds (3ish) and is perfect for me.
Take the time to experiment with different barrel lengths until you find what works best for you.

Thanks for your inputs and ideas. I am curious as to if the opposite is true, where by using a shorter barrel on a 440 pitched R13, could the pitch be altered from 440 to 442 and without disturbing the intonation? Thanks.

Very often we play 442 and the American model R13 is the most common clarinet here.
