 Stephen Fox and who else?
Author: NorbertTheParrot

From Stephen Fox's website http://www.sfoxclarinets.com/bio.html:

"His position as an instrument builder is unique, as one of only a couple of manufacturers of custom professional clarinets in the Western Hemisphere, the only one outside Europe with a dual concentration on both modern clarinets and reproduction historical instruments"

Leaves me wondering (and I guess I could always email him to ask):

1) Assuming "a couple" means precisely "two", who is the other manufacturer of custom professional clarinets in the Western Hemisphere? Do Chadash and Rossi count as custom builders? Or Peter Eaton, who falls into the Western Hemisphere by just a few miles?

2) Does this imply that there are manufacturers of custom professional clarinets in the Eastern Hemisphere? Who are they? Is he referring to makers of German-system instruments?

3) Which makers within Europe have a dual concentration on both modern clarinets and reproduction historical instruments?

You'll find several Eastern Hemisphere (or German) makers here http://www.cs.ru.nl/~bolke/DuitseKlar/oehlerlistOld.html that do both modern German/Oehler and reproduction clarinets.

BIG assumption, as that is only one of the definitions ... "an indefinite small number" is more likely.

But ... what is the purpose of this thread? "Parroting" a bio? Why don't you email him and ask? Too much trouble?

"what is the purpose of this thread"

I'm interested to know. Not for any reason, just idle interest. Is there a new forum rule that we can only post questions if we declare precisely why we require the information?

Why don't you email him and ask? Too much trouble?

It would have taken exactly as much trouble to email him as to post here. But I thought others might also find this information interesting. Had I emailed him, the rules of the forum would not have allowed me to post his reply.

"Parroting" a bio?

Don't make fun of my name and I won't make fun of yours. Would you have said this if the well-known conductor Andrew Parrott had posted here? No, I thought not.

Is Parrot your real name?

Then, why post Stephen Fox's bio? Yes, I suspect after reading all your posts of an ulterior motive.

That is patently untrue.

Make fun of mine ... not problem, and it's not an alias, either.

I don't think he would have chosen "AndrewTheParrott" as a screen name, and, had he, I would have had the same fun.

Why not email him, he's a lovely guy. He recently finished a 7 keyed Grenser copy he made for me and I can say his work is amazing.

Then, why post Stephen Fox's bio?

Because Stephen Fox's bio had raised the questions in my mind. If I hadn't read his bio, I wouldn't have thought to ask these questions. Yes, I guess I could have asked the questions without referring to SF's bio. But so far as I can see, all I did was the online equivalent of asking a friend, "have a look at what SF says.... what other makers do you think he's referring to?" I don't find that sinister.

Yes, I suspect after reading all your posts of an ulterior motive.

Well, recent threads I have started have included a question about fingering charts, and a report of an "Albert Opera" model clarinet that intrigued me. Last month I started a thread asking what we should do when we see inconsistencies in a score. What ulterior motive can be seen in any of these posts is beyond my limited imagination. If you have specific concerns about my posts, you could try telling me explicitly what they are, instead of imputing unnamed transgressions. You have my email address, I think. It is working; I have just checked.
