I'm having trouble deciding on a school. I'm a Sr. in high school and need to start applying to colleges. Now I know I want to double major in elementry ed or child sycology and music. In music I don't know if I want conducting, composing, performance, education, or music therapy! This subject is very overwelming for me because it is so important to me to get into a good school. Now, I have a good idea of top music schools in the US, not conservitories regular colleges, butwhat about other countries? Are there schools with a stronger music program then I will find hear? Like in Canada, France, Italy ect.?? I want to study with the best, but I'm not positive of the exact focus I want to have in music. Any help would be great!

In Canada, there are several universities with strong music programs. Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Toronto, University of Victoria, Brandon University are considered among the strong ones. Wilfrid Laurier has music theraphy, and so does University of Windsor. I could send you the postcard to write to U of Toronto Music for more information; if you give me your mailing address privately, I'll send it to you.

Hey, the University of Maryland is a good school to go to. We just finished our new fine arts center and my best friend (and room mate) is majoring in elementary ed. So come here!!

The bigger the better isn't neccessarily true. In a small state university, you can have all the benefits of a large university, perhaps more. We've had world renowned artists come to our music department, the sax professor will be putting out a CD, and the band director is so superb! The choir director is fabulous, and everybody is there because they want to.
Sometimes the faculty of larger universities can be snotty. I don't know this for a fact, but I had a pretty lousy experience at my UCONN audition. The professors just seemed mean. I am glad I am attending Western Connecticut State University over UCONN.
Your college choice should be based on academics and the faculty. A school in the US can have an equal to or better faculty than a faculty overseas. I don't regret for a minute that I'm not in Juilliard, Berklee, or Eastman; all three top music schools. But sure I'd like to go to Indiana University-Bloomington, Univ of Michigan-Ann Arbor, or Univ. of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, but where's the money?
Consider all of your options. Going to the "school next door" is sometimes the best thing for students.
I can't make the choice for you, but I encourage you to consider all your options before deciding you want the best! Western CT has a highly rated program, but not nationally rated. I wish it were.
