 Help Buying an Oboe
Author: Bob Mutchler

I know this is a clarinet board, but I need a recommendation on how to buy an oboe for my 11 year old son who also plays the clarinet. He is just learning the oboe and needs a student oboe. We are buying him a Buffet R13 clarinet to get him a quality clarinet but also want to get him an oboe. Any ideas or pointers to people or home pages or stores to help me out would be very helpful.

Please email me at vamutchler@aol.com. Thanks so very much.

Bob

1. Find an oboe teacher, preferably a symphony player and enlist his/her help and ADVICE. 2. Go to EBAY and search, dont bid-buy yet, oboe using well known names, or by wood/plastic terms, to become acquainted with this "jungle", much more tricky than looking for a clarinet!! 3. Compare with the brochures etc of the new-inst. discounters as to keywork as well as going prices. 4. Gain some familiarity re: keying systems, closed-hole [plateau] vs open hole [prob. avoid] , and construction, age [if used, wood cracked? even if repaired prob. avoid]. To get a good wood will be costly, you will need a true expert to evaluate it, so be cautious. Lots more to be said! LUCK, Don

It may be better to consult with idrs people:idrs=international double reed society.

Best of luck to your son, I found that to be a very difficult transition, The double reed is very different (and I found difficult to master) and the fingering is totally different. Only good news... the oboe is pitched in C. I do know a pro who plays all of the woodwinds quite well and specializes in oboe and bari sax of all the combinations.
