Based on a search of the archives, I've narrowed the choice of a beginner's clarinet to either a Buffet B-12 or a Yamaha ? .

The Sneezy "Equipment/What to Get the Beginner" page lists the Buffet B-12, and the Yamaha 34. The Buffet is plastic, and much less expensive than the wooden Yamaha 34.

Does this mean that that the Buffet B-12 is a better choice than the Yamaha plastic CL-20?

If I get the Buffet B-12, I will replace the mouthpiece with one of the recommended better ones. The Yamaha comes with a 4C mouthpiece. Is the 4C okay, or should it be replaced with a mouthpiece like the Hite Premier?

It means that as of the time of writing that page no one had experience with the CL-20. I still haven't heard anything at all about that clarinet.

Almost everyone I've talked to says the 4C is a perfectly good mouthpiece to use.

 Hi Bill,

I have experience with both models and mouthpieces.

Regarding the YCL-20 vs. B-12. Both are excellent student models, and the choice as to which one to pick is a matter of personal preference. I thought both played fairly similar. You can't go wrong either way.

Regarding the mouthpiece. I personally believe the Hite Premier is the best student mouthpiece on the market today. However, as Mark indicates, the Yamaha mouthpiece is also very good.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for the helpful information.

I decided to get the Yamaha CL-20 under a purchase/rental program.

I also purchased a Hite Premier mouthpiece. I've seen so many favorable reviews on this board, that I just have to give it a try.
