Funny that youtube came up. I didn't see any reference to this guy.

He sounds absolutely amazing. Anyone have info on who he is and if he has any professional recordings out? I'd buy them all in a second.

Give me a brake!!!!!!!!!!!!! If he have cds out you can have them all. I've heard many much better clarinetist than this one. His style is compleatly oposite to what I would teach. Very pressed tone and stiff movements. I reccomend that you listen to Michael Collins version of the Spohr concertos that's professionalism.

I guess you love Karl Leister,Alfred Prinz and Ernst Ottensamer and players like that. Nothing wrong with that but they are just not my cup of tea.

Iceland Clarinet, not to sound too brash. But whom do you like, who are you to make such harsh statements about this player?

It seems that anybody who does not exactly fit your concept of tone sounds "pressed" "unprofessional", "stiff".

How about the fact that this player is in front of an orchestra *live*, playing this very difficult piece with good phrasing, great technical control and intonation?

Also as far as I know Spohr wrote these pieces for Johann Simon Hermstedt a german clarinetist whose tone was probably closer to the Leister, Prinz and Ottensamer than Collins.

Your judgments are so one-sided that it sounds that according to you, there is only one way to play the clarinet. There is beauty in the playing of Stolzman and Leister, yet they could not sound more different.

Sylvain, you are reading an allegoric explanation of why Sweden is a tourist destination, and even the North Koreans won't invade Iceland.

(North Korea being the home of flying monkeys.)

I suppose this is what comes of eating Svio, Slatur, rotted Shark or (my personal favorite) Hrutspungur. All preferable to McPickled Otter tail.

Just listened to a couple of clips of him playing and he is very good. I wouldn't say particularly amazing, but quite good - no objections here.

Well said, Sylvain.

And, of course, it's perfectly OK to give opinions about players better than one's self - we all do it all the time. But I feel very sad for you - only being able to enjoy one style of playing. Even though I may lean one particular way with my own interpretations, I'm glad I'm able to enjoy different interpretations as well, and respect the players for their ability to pull off their own musical ideas - even if they're different than mine.

Ok the players I like(both sound and musically) are Walter Boeykens,George Pieterson,John McCaw,Reginald Kell,Sharon Kam,Jonathan Cohler,Gervase de Peyer among others. The players I also like but don't sound too good in my ears are Martin Fröst,Larry Combs,Sabine Meyer,Peter Schmidl among others. Players I don't like at all are Karl Leister,Alfred Prinz,Richard Stoltzman,Emma Johnson,Eudard Brunner,Thea King among others. So there you have it.

BornAgainClarinetist,

If you think Curzio Petraglio is the greatest, then you are fortunate to have "discovered" him so that you can start collecting and enjoying his work.

He is certainly competent, but I would reserve "amazing" for those who can also extemporize and do a gliss like Shaw.

Mr. Iceland,

Can you give us a link or video to some of iceland's finest clarinet playing? Something really your style.

Can you give us some background on the icelandic school?

I grew up in philadelphia if you might be interested in some of the players that came from that school.

A thread like this points out to me why anyone who would post their recital to this board and ask for comments has much thicker skin than I do. If Stoltzman, Combs and Meyer don't play to to your tastes, I probably won't either !

I think this is a fine performance. The sound is beautiful and clear with excellent intonation. Also, I think he's captured the character of Spohr's music beautifully!

I'm not an extremely seasoned or experienced musician, but, for the benefit of certain young prospective professionals, I'd suggest a more open-minded approach to the assessment of other musicians. I continuously hear some of the top musicians of the world denounced as essentially terrible on this bulletin board. I find this fairly tacky and fool-hardy. Any of these people can out their own name through a search engine and read your "hate-mail" about their work. This is not mature behavior, and it could damage your reputation as a professional in the future.

I used to do this way when I was a student, but I've outgrown it. I've heard many outstanding musicians from numerous backgrounds play. The one thing that I notice about the best musicians players is not their beautiful sound or crisp, clear articulation, etc., but rather their "musicianship." Their performances are always original. The interpretation never sounds contrived or forced, just perfectly natural and seemingly improvised.

I think this recording fits into that category.

Iceland Clarinet,

I am sorry this turned into a flame against Icelandic clarinetists ;)

My post was a pre-coffee grumpy Sunday morning post, and I apologize if it came across a little harsh. I'm going to try to be a little clearer without sounding condescending and argumentative.
While I respect your opinion and your freedom to express it, I do not put much value to it. You may ask the reason why (or you may not care). Well, for one you often make very harsh statements about so and so's playing, and discard their performance based only on one aspect of their playing (most often tone). If you told us a little more about why you don't like the performance, I may learn a little more from your posts.
Second, as crnichols pointed out, your opinion on a player's performance may be read by this very same player and some of your comments are borderline offensive. That does not mean we should all bask into collective "pats on the back", but a little diplomatic touch in a critique goes a long way.

I'm not familiar with the Iceland Clarinet Community but perhaps some of the working clarinetists, symphony players, terachers, etc. in Iceland can give us their thoughts on this player and Karl Leister, Alfred Prinz and other's that IcelandClarinet criticizes so strongly. Perhaps, Iceland has a concept of clarinet playing that is not in sync with that of the remainder of the world clarinet clarinet community. Maybe, it is "in vogue" in Iceland to criticize certain players. Maybe they have an entire clarinet tradition that is not familiar to the rest of the world.

I would really like to hear from some of the clarinetists in Iceland that are professionals, making a living at playing and teaching.

One additional point, does anybody think that we should perhaps send a goodwill gesture to Karl Leister or Alfred Prinz? They must be suffering mightly from these slings and arrows from the BBoard.

53engine,

Iceland Clarinet is the most vociferous representative of the Icelandic Clarinet community. Haven't really read any others commenting with any frequency on the BB. Since Icelandclarinet's is the lone voice so frequently heard we should probably cut the rest some slack.

Considering that many of the Icelandic are playing Walter Grabner's mouthpieces I can't imagine that the school is considerably different from others...but I could be wrong! (I haven't heard any of their playing in particular, which is most likely my loss.)

does anyone else feel like this is becoming a flame fest, which might be unnecessary? I don't really like seeing all Iceland clarinetists being thrown to the ground, any more than I like hearing people say that English musicians are all terrible (myself being english)

Let's try not to judge so much, maybe?

"Which really great orchestra or clarinet player or music institute is from Iceland?......."

Haven't you guys heard of Einar Jóhannesson?

I think Iceland Clarinet's (over-) reaction was due to the exaggerated description in the title of this thread. Describing someone as "beyond amazing" certainly raises extremely high expectations.

Ben you can say that I go berserk with words but that's just because people here are putting words into my mouth. I have never said anything about my opinion being others opinions. I represent myself and nobady else. And btw. I don't find Einar Jóhannesson to be the best here in Iceland ;)

Threads like this is why I don't participate in this board regularly. I've got better things to do like play my clarinet and learn rep for concerts. I feel sorry for those that feel the need to put down someone's valid opinion because it conflicts with their own.

Agreed.

Then again, you can't speak of harmony if the whole band is playing unisono... :)
