 What # grit sandpaper?
Author: Ebclarinet1

Hi!

My local hardware dealers don't seem to sell much beyond 600 grit sandpaper. I have been using some Fine 1500 grit that i obtained several years ago (and it works great) but was wondering if the 600 would be adequate or too rough for refinishing reed surfaces. That would save ordering it online.

Any suggestions?

Automotive supply may be better outfitted...

Reed rush is available from Muncy Winds

Emery paper or 3M microfinishing film may be searched online.

You can probably find the "ultra fine" abrasive papers at a hobby store like Michaels, for example.

I think 400 and 600 is fine enough for reed adjustment.

1500 would be for polishing.

I've had good luck finding the finer grit sandpaper at automotive body shops. Car painters evidently use tons of it when fixing fenderbenders and repainting. My local Ford dealer gave me a double handfull of varying grits, and didn't even bother to write up an invoice.

1500 is good for polishing the back (flat side) of the reed, but it doesn't need to be so fine for adjusting them. I use the Ridenour ATG system, which came with two different grits, I believe 320 on one side and 600 on the other. Tom suggested getting Norton brand sandpaper from an automotive supply store when I need to buy more.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Neither Lowe's or Home Depot here carry more than the 600 grit but your suggestions of automotive supply stores is a good one. Those we have aplenty! I also found it on amazon and might just order some when I'm ordering books.

I only use the sandpaper on the reed back. On the front I use either my oboe reed knife or reed rush. Don't know why I've used that division of labor but it's worked for me.

A sheet of plain paper also works great for polishing the back. Depending on how fine you want it you can use regular typing paper, or rougher paper such as construction paper or a piece cut from a brown paper bag.

Smooth paper is roughly(sic) 2000 grit
