In a fit of practical absurdity, I felt obliged to start a new thread along the lines of the recent ones about "oiling" and "boiling" one's reeds.
So.........
I've always been a fan of breaking in reeds by wetting them for ten minutes a day in water, followed each time by drying them between the thumb and forefinger, rubbing only from the heel towards the tip; then setting them on a counter flat side up to dry overnight.
If one doesn't wash one's hands before drying the reeds thusly, then the reeds will become soiled.

Oh, I thought this was about inadvertedly dropping your (mouthwatered) reed while fumbling with the ligature and you just have enough time to pick it off the floor, fasten it and clamp on...

beejay .. for a second there I thought you said you could get VD from a reed.
David - so, let's see.
put the reed on it's back (flat side up)
and hope it does not get warped.
and make sure you have dirty fingers
what do you do next?
boil it in laundry detergent to clean them ?

I actually thought you meant to place your reeds under soil to impregnate them with minerals or something. Let's call it the "reed planting" method.

Didn't Bonade take cigarette ashes (or at least some kind of dirt) and rub that into the reed pores...I guess hoping to close them up a little?
I'm a total reed idiot (if it plays, I play it)...maybe this soiling thing is right up my alley. I don't do too well with boiling water or oils.

Apparently some people have taken my post seriously -- folks, I was just making a (very dumb) joke on the euphonious proximity of separate (serious) topics which happened to have similar-sounding titles. Either some of you lack a sense of humor (which unfortunately I believe to be the case) or my humor is way off the wall and/or stupid (which I KNOW to be the case).
So please y'all, lighten up. It's only a clarinet. If the clarinet represents your entire life, then you have my sympathy as well as my admiration, in approximately equal amounts.

Some folks like their reeds dipped in oil.
Some put them in water to boil. (And, afterwards, wrap them in foil.)
But give me a good Rico Royal
that's been buried 9 months in rich soil. (Burma Shave.)

All this excessive oiling, boiling, coiling, foiling, soiling and toiling will only end up in spoiling your reeds.
And you'll be back to square one.

And another "suggestion":
Bring your reeds to the Tatoo studio and ask the tatooter (or however the guy behind the counter may be called I dunno) to add some more colour to your sound....
Take what you`ve got and make the best of it!

Rather than pads that aren't seated
I think that it's not a crime
To jest and take some time
When speaking of reeds
