Not the one, but dancer Tom Patricola is in the cast.....as well as Alan Alda's father Robert. Great music.

Hi John.
Love of them both...I would use your best parts and his/hers best parts and put them both together to make for a even better musical idea!

There used to be a wonderful recording with Jimmy Abato doing the clarinet smear. I'm sure it is long out of print by now. Abato came to UT in 1964 when he was with LeBlanc and I asked him about it. He then demonstrated it and talked about it. He must have done it 12 times for us and each time was perfect It was amazing. His program with us was the Finale from the Tchaikowsky Violin concerto. The first movement from Weber's Eb Con and a beautiful arrangement of Porgy and Bess for alto sax. His playing of the violin finale was stunning. Absolutely perfect unlike his recording which is a tiny bit sloppy in spots.

I think it must be Al Gallodoro too. He played with Paul Whiteman for many years and on his web site it says: "Holding the distinction of having the world’s record for the most performances of the clarinet slide in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (OVER 10,000 TIMES),....."

Here is an email I received this am......
"YES, it was indeed Al who played the entire soundtrack on lead clarinet, bass clarinet, and alto sax parts. However, Al did not appear in the film because when it was filmed after the audio was made, he had to return to new York for another engagement! So it's somebody else you see, but it is indeed Al you hear! tHANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST! Take care, JoAnn with Al at Chmusic!"

However, I contimue to be confused. Here is a link to an album of the soundtrack from the movie, R & B, and you hear a different version than JM's link from the films finale. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYwYj3U_f18
So, did someone else do this "live" on film with Oscar while the official film track was done by Al and a bunch of studio guys at another session??

Thanks for the info on our mystery "glisser".
I'm a big fan of Al's, and hope to visit him again soon in Oneonta.
Say hi from me if you see him.
Thanks,
JJM

William: The tag for your youtube link says that the performance is by Earl Wild, so the album cover put up on the screen has nothing to do with the audio.

Regarding the audio UTube clip I found, this is a response from the President of Ivory Classics which has re-released some of Earl Wild's recordings:
"That is indeed Earl Wild performing (Whiteman too I'm sure), but Earl Wild was not the pianist on the original soundtrack of the movie. I don't know who was - I would assume it was Oscar Levant. Earl performed in public with Whiteman and on radio and TV frequently. Where this performance came from I could not say. I know it's not the one that I released on Ivory Classics in 1997 (that was a 1945 recording with Earl and Whiteman - and Al Gollodoro, which incorporated a small group of voices as accompaniment)."
So, Al Gollodoro was the clarinetist on the clip JM posted and also recorded with Whiteman with Earl Wild as soloist on other recordings, however, the clarinetist on this Earl Wild album remains a mystery--as does the source of the recording.
