 Who is James Kanter?
Author: C2thew

Knowing very little about James Kanter, i'm a pretty big fan of his work. From what i understand, he was a student under the legendary Kaspar and learned to adapt his mouthpieces to almost equal that of kaspar's. I tried a James kanter mouthpiece and was stunned by it's sound. It had almost a romantic nostalgia when i just listened to it and played with it too. At first, i was told to just listen to this unknown mouthpiece as branding has had a profound effect on making mouthpieces sound better then they are. It's one of my friends best mouthpieces he owns, right alongside a cicero and a refaced Steel ebonite.

anyone know about james kanter and his really incredible work?

I use to take Clarinet lesson with Jim's Dad, Ben Kanter. His dad owned a large music store in CA. Jim was the manager. But he got way too busy with playing and could not take the store from his dad. It is too bad that we can't get one of his mpc's. He only made a few and only for close friends of his. Oh! The music store was, Baxtor's.

JK was (is?) a legendary mpc technician and--I think--master Hollywood film musician. Only tried one of his refaced Ann Arbor Kaspars and--although I play a vintage Chicago Kaspar--did not like it. Just wasn't meant for me, I guess. It was sold to another clarinetist who thought it was amazing. One persons junk is .......(ya'll know the rest)

He was profiled in 2003 "The Clarinet" journal (No. 3) as one installment of a series entitled "I Wonder Who the Clarinet Player Was," by James Gillespie. You might try to find that if you're really interested. My copy is not easily accessible at the moment.

Otherwise, a search of the bulletin board archives and the Klarinet list archives will yield some random information as will a google search on his name (in quotes) and clarinet. BTW, he's listed on the credits for The Simpson's Movie and the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean.

Best regards,
jnk

Or films he has recorded for?

For what it's worth, a few of the first-call LA reed guys play (or have played at one point) Kanters or Kanter-faced mouthpieces, including Gene Cipriano, Dan Higgins, Bob Sheppard, and Ron Janelli (although Ron is now in NY).

Besides the film scores, Kanter also played principal clarinet in the Pacific Symphony until this season.

FWI, David Shifrin also played (plays?) Kanter mouthpieces.

I have the recording of the Pacific Symphony playing some works of Copland. Kanter has a really beautiful sound if this disc is any indicator.

I can NOT verify this, but I have been told that he likes to work on, or at least has done nice work with, Riffault mouthpiece blanks.
