Hello all
okay, i'm starting to look around for graduate schools. i am located in the Iowa/Illinois part of the country. i am looking for a few good schools to start my search. any reccomendations for exceptional teachers/programs. i am okay with going out of the iowa/illinois region (but moving across the country would be problematic)
i look forward to any pointers you send my way.
JK
oh, i am primarily clarinet, but somewhere with a strong saxophone teacher is good too. and my aim is performance.

Hello,
Definitely check out the University of South Carolina. My old college roommate, Joe Eller teaches clarinet there. His students sound fabulous. Tell him I sent you!

You could try Ball State, Indiana University, and Northwestern U.
Ball State offers a degree in woodwind doubling. I met someone who majored in saxophone there who also sounded very good on clarinet and flute. IU is very competitive, and Howard Klug's students sound great...probably other wonderful teachers there as well. I think Larry Combs still teaches at Northwestern.

The teachers at Northwestern are Steve Cohen and Lawrie Bloom. Larry Combs teaches at DePaul.

keep the suggestions coming.
thanks so much,
JK

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor has great teachers for both clarinet and saxophone. Don Sinta is a legend as both a musician and pedagogue and now Dan Gilbert, 2nd clarinet of the Cleveland Symphony, has taken over Fred Ormand's legacy as the new professor of clarinet; alongside Deborah Chodaki who is also an excellent clarinet teacher.

You could check out the University of Minnesota. Eugene Rousseau is the Sax professor and Burt Hara is the clarinet teacher. The Twin Cities is a nice place to live for a few years, too.

do music students need to take the GRE for acceptance, or is that decided by the school?

Not to toot our own horns, but Boston Conservatory has a very good program with lots of variety and an excellent saxophone teacher as you requested. Faculty are:
Clarinet:
Michael Norsworthy
Ian Greitzer
Jonathan Cohler
Saxophone:
Ken Radnofsky
Apologies if this seems like a shameless plug, but I think the program and faculty are really worth a look.

I can agree with Mr. Redwine, considering I live in South Carolina and took some lessons from Mr. Eller! He personally cares for each of his students, but works you hard to create the best musician out of you.
