Yes. Shocking. The best orchestra in the world is obviously the Mannes College the New School for Music Preparatory Division Sinfonia.

I echo John Moses on this one. I'm one of those people who feel that the best orchestra in the world isn't a orchestra that is consisted of players from the Berlin & NY Phils and the Chicago & London Symphonies, but is instead a orchestra consisted of free-lancing studio musicians that work a different gig each day - while doubling and sight-reading and all that good stuff.

I thought the best symphony orchestra in the world was (hands down - no competition) the LSO ...

Before trying to choose a "best" of anything, it might be useful to know what criteria will be applied.
And nomination is not the same as winning.

Would this by any chance be a local award for high school productions (or possibly community theater productions)?
Best regards,

To put this thread on a more substantial tangent -
In a 1983 article,
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,923579-1,00.html
Time magazine ranked the US orchestras:
1. Chicago
2. St. Louis
3. Boston
4. Philadelphia
5. Los Angeles
6. Cleveland
7. New York
8. San Francisco
9. Pittsburgh
Honorable mention: Minnesota, Dallas, Washington (National), Cincinnati, Houston, Rochester, Baltimore, Detroit, Atlanta, Buffalo Philharmonic, Denver, Utah
However in a 1994 article,
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,979946,00.html
Time magazine cited Cleveland as having the best orchestra in the USA, followed by Chicago, St Louis and New York.
As for Europe -
A 2006 article outlining The Top Ten European Orchestras, according to Ten European Media Outlets placed the Vienna Philharmonic on top.
http://www.playbillarts.com/news/article/5381.html
A total of 25 ensembles were named in the voting. The top ten, with point counts, were as follows:
1. Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (86 points)
2. Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam (85 points)
3. Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (79 points)
4. London Symphony Orchestra (55 points)
5. Dresden Staatskapelle (48 points)
6. Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (47 points)
7. Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig (37 points)
8. St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra (31 points)
9. Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (12 points)
10. Philharmonia Orchestra [London] (9 points)

"Discuss and argue amongst yourselves...GBK"
I heard the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Chicago this past February. It was one of the most amazing concerts I've ever heard. I was absolutely riveted by every phrase they played. I left with chills and tears. I can't say that for any other concert I've heard. I've also heard a string quartet from the Vienna Phil while in Austria. The 1st violinist was the VPO concertmaster. Their performance left something to be desired.
