Sounds backwards.


The less open tip openings take a harder reed to get the "same" effect as a more open mouthpeice with a softer reed. The length of the lay can be short or long. The difference is subtley like the above in that the longer lay makes up (a little) for a smaller opening. However, the lay length has more to do with how much mouthpiece that you take into the mouth.

All said, the response and sound are what YOU determine when you play it with a given reed. You can research dimensions until you're blue in the face, get the mouthpiece and it won't even play. You just have to start trying them out and when you find one that plays great, then you may START to make SOME assumptions about dimensions.
