Assuming this is for orchastra band(since buffet isn't the best choice for marching band), listen for the over sound of the instrument. Sometimes it might take an hour to hear it. Try playing scales in lower octves and lower octives. Which notes come out clear and more crisp(better). When I went to select my instrument(between a yahama and a buffet) I just played a few scales and then tried my marching band song. After that I knew which one suited me better, and played better for me(the yahama).
