Hi there,
I can't offer any insight myself, but my first teacher (Stephen K. Johnston) wrote his dissertation on the Clarinet music of Spohr and it is cited in the New Grove Dictionary. I would imagine that his dissertation is available through the University of Maryland (he was the first clarinetist to receive a doctorate there, by the way).
I've not been in contact with Dr. Johnston in a number of years, but his contact information is available on the Shenandoah University website:

He is a marvelous fellow and I'm certain he would be flattered if you contacted him. His knowledge of clarinet literature is formidable (he'll undoubtably have cogent opinions regarding Crusell editions, as well) and he is also a fantastic performer and teacher.
Best regards,
Chris
