 Private lessons -vs- band practice
Author: chipper

I have one night each week to devote to music outside of the house. I took private lessons for one and one half years then began playing with the community band. Most is going pretty well. I practice my exercises at home but am having a bit of trouble practicing the band music alone.

Would it be wise to exchange the band practice for private lessons for a while? The instructor I've been working with is also a band member so we could work on the band music. They seem to play the same stuff for years, so I could "get it" with the instructor then re enter the band? I'm having fun and doing little or no harm and am actually progressing a bit, but after six months with the band don't feel that I could cary the part alone.

Lay some wisdom on me folks.

Tough choice.

I'd recommend that you figure out how to do both. Perhaps you could arrange for your band colleague to do your lesson before or after the band rehearsal -- on your night out.

For my part, I need my lessons; and I have the most fun playing in my ensembles --the goal of my lesson work. I'm glad I don't have this tough choice to make.

Hi,

This is an almost impossible question to answer as the basis of it is really how well do you play. Determining that is pretty difficult without hearing you play. It would be much like asking a doctor to diagnose you without an examination.

You may have some rhythm and counting problems. Or you could have some tone/intonation/technique issues that are causing you to have "a bit of trouble practicing the band music alone."

Your teacher is probably the best one to answer your question. That individual knows your playing ability and also knows the demands of the literature you are performing. Let that person offer an informed opinion.

In addition to the responses already given - maybe there's a band member with a similar problem, or one who'd prefer not to practise alone either. How'bout doing it together?

Second the sectional work with a colleague who feels the same way about not wanting to practice alone!!! Also, why not bring a tape and record the band rehearsal!!! That way you wouldn't have to play "by yourself" and could hear how your part fits in with not just the clarinet section, but the entire band!!! Plus you would get the oppurtunity to feel like a "soloist" every night!!! Best of Luck!!!
