 ISP Locale IDs
Author: ohsuzan

The addition of the ISP location on our posts is fantastic! Thanks, Mark, for your continuing improvement of this board. What you do here is (or should be) a model for the online music community.

It would be better if they were accurate though - mine's several thousand miles away from where I live.

I dislike them. I choose to reveal my true identity and location in my signature; that is my choice.

I understand Mark to take a different view, and as the owner of the board it is his right to do so.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

I also don't like it. Regardless of what it actually means, it gives the impression that I'm from a certain city in my country which I am not. If it would say the city I live in that would be ok with me (although I prefer it wouldn't do that too), I just don't like it that it shows a different city, which is why after several years in this forum I made a signature.

Edit: OK now after I posted I see it was changed, so I can get rid of my signature.

No, since you're on a dynamic IP number - a city, possibly different, might show up later. It depends on the routing that you're taking that day.

When I post from home (Novi, MI) it shows me as posting from Chicago - a significant difference!

Thanks for adding this. Many posts say "here it costs...; here we do...; here common practice is... with no explanation of where 'here' is. At least we now have some idea.

I'm posting simply because I need to find out where I am.

Now, if I could only use this to tell me where I am in a piece of music, or better yet, where I should be.

Er...is it Milton (Friedman) or (John Maynard) Keynes? Sounds like an economically interesting town. [tongue]

Okay, Mark, I need to ask:
Why do some postings not get more specific than "United States"? Perhaps I don't understand what this really means? Thank you.

Because the IP number assigned and the database I do the lookup in aren't more specific. It's about 97% right on the country and about 60% right guessing the city if the IP number isa one where that info is available. For a non-trivial amount of money I can get it 99% right on the country and 75% right on the city.

Ah (editing now), that's pretty close, about ten miles away.

I continue to be mystified by the codes in UK addresses.

B8 Reigate?
F2 Winchester?
I6 Milton Keynes?

They aren't postcodes, nor car registration areas, nor anything else Joe Public might recognise.

Ben - Milton Keynes as the city of the economic middle way is a joke that was played out long ago!

Ben - on the contrary, I know Switzerland rather well. The mountainous bits, at any rate. Not familiar with Schlieren; have just had to look it up in Wikipedia. Seems it's a great place to buy a used car or go indoor climbing....
