Yes, there was an earlier series of The Clarinet in the 1950s. The issues were the size of a "trade" paperback book and usually ran to 32 pages. I have a complete set, which I got on eBay from an old member's estate, and they contain lots of interesting stuff. I don't think there is an index of articles.
Conservatory libraries (Oberlin, for example) often have complete sets. You should also look at Woodwind World, from the 1950s and early 1960s, which I have a fairly complete set of, along with the clarinet materials from various other issues.
Symphony Magazine, from the late 1940s and early 1950s, had guest articles from various instrumentalists. I haven't been able to find an archive, but I think the clarinet articles were collected in a supplemental pamphlet, which I have, sent to subscribers of the first series of The Clarinet.
A PDF of the list of back issues of the current series of The Clarient, up through 2004, with summary tables of contents, is at http://www.clarinet.org/pdfs/journal/BK_Issue_Form.pdf.
You can sort Mark's index by volume, author or title by going to http://www.clarinet.org/journal/masterindex.asp.
