 Buffet Festival or RC?
Author: missclarinetist

Hey guys, I'm thinking of investing or rather save up money for a new Buffet Festival or RC. Which one would you get? I can't decide! Which was is better in your opinion?

They're both fine instruments, they're both around the same price, they each have different idiosyncracies.

Which do you like? That's all that matters.

well, i play on a buffet festival Bb and am going to get an A soon. obviously you are going to try both of them before you make your decision. the thing that i really like about the festival is the Eb lever. It really helps when im sight reading in more complex keys. unless you are going to special order an RC from the factory, i dont think that you can get one with the Eb lever on it.

the reason i chose my festival is because, out of all the clarinets i tried, it stood out from the rest. i didn't really go to the music store knowing i would walk out with a festival...i had actually wanted a prestige to be honest. i tried between 12-15 clarinets, all buffets, and the first festival i picked up aloud me to play with the most beautiful sound i have ever produced. i checked the intonation with a tuner and it was better than my old r13 so i bought it.

I have a prestige R13 but I would recommend the Festival. Actually, both are excellent clarinets (Destival and RC), but I personally don't like the RC that much, can't really say why. I've only tried a couple of Festivals and RCs and liked the Festivals better. Why are you limiting yourself to only RC and Festival, and why not try both at least? An old teacher of mine bought the RC cause he liked it better, but I don't like his clarinet that much.
You will have to try both and see for your self.

The RC design is an outgrowth of the R13 development, and the last design directed by Robert Carree (hence the RC). It has some wonderful tuning, and even voicing at the expensive of projection.

As mentioned before, there is no substitute for play testing.

Get three clarinets in the room (including your current horn) and try them.
Stick with the one that makes you want to play more...

I've never at all struggled with projection on my rc prestiges? In my experience, for the most part, the RC's have lacked the thin edgy and piercing quality found in many R13's. I used to play Festivals think they are fantastic as well. I also like the new Tosca's.

I would say go with the Festival. It is close to the R13 bore and the R13 is one of the most widely used professional clarinet in the world, and it (the R13) has well withstood the test of time. And the Festival seems to have an even warmer tone than the R13. I will look at many Festivals next year when I'm ready to get a new instrument.
