 Low Eb or D[?]
Author: Don Berger
Date:   2005-02-19 16:34

Having had a modest success in producing a "decent" low D on my [low Eb] bass cl, by virtue of "telescoping" 3 soft drink cups [cutting out their bottoms], thereby losing the low Eb, and being unable to finish Income Taxes until our stock-broker reopens [a long weekend ahead]. I feel a bit of low-cl research-tinkering is in order. Thought 1. extend my small-bore alto cl by 1/2 tone [ to D], whereby it would match the basset horn's range, sim. with a Full Boehm Bb cl [or A with the low Eb !] to add a D to their ranges, and ?perhaps? add to their use in playing Mozart's concerto, and other basset clarinet parts. I do recognise the loss of low Eb's [hopefully the music doesnt call for both low Eb and D] and the need for low C's for Moz's basset cl, in spots. Thought 2. try to fit a soprano cl mp to my alto cl to see if it might play even more like a basset horn. So, I'm asking for comments/help/experiences, but please dont just call me an idiotic heretic, even tho I may qualify !! TKS, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

hmm... I really don't know much about tinkering with lower notes, but I use a big trombone mute to get a low D out of my bass. The piece "Ross Roy" (i believe thats the one) calls for it in band this year.

Dear Don
Doing that to your instruments will limit your chances of playing the Mozart Concerto and Quintet because they are full chromatic in the basset registers. Ebs are quite prominent in both pieces as are the low Cs. I do like the sound of your ideas though. Would sugest you get hold of a basset for the Mozarts.

TKS - Peter, I know you are right. While I've heard all of [or student portions] of the 622, not being technically capable of the more difficult passages, I certainly wouldn't even try to use the tube-in-bell [ poor-boy] method for the Concerto, more likely only for other, less demanding, Basset Horn music. A close [sop-bass clar] friend borrowed a pair of B H's on back and I enjuyed the challenge, being the more familiar with alto cl, had less problem than he. Have heard Shifrin beautifully play both the 622 and the Q, close-up admiration. I guess my interests are more acoustic than "musical" to approximate the distinctive B H tonality with a small-bore Selmer alto. What experiments I may try with 17/6, 19/7 and 20/7 Bb sopranos and my only A, little thot as yet. This is a sort-of extension of a career in research activity, perhaps. Will "report" findings. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Sort of off-topic, but I have a low-Bb baritone sax on which, when low A is called for and I have some time before and after the note during which no low-Bbs are written, I insert a 6"-long piece of 4"-diameter PVC pipe into the bell, finger low-Bb, and get a perfect low A (a neat trick I read about on the "Sax on the Web" BB).

I'll bet your bari is an Eb ! Don
