We have just started playing this song in Wind Ensemble, and I am having trouble with the fifth movement, Lord Melbourne. I get the free time, but the 2.5/4 and the 1.5/4, are screwing me up. Does anyone have any advice on how to get these measures better? Any other advice about the piece is appreciated. I am playing the bass clarinet part. Thanks in advance.

Count the eighth note. It is more or less constant regardless of meter. Also, assuming your WE director is capable of conducting this piece properly, WATCH. If you bury your head in the score and try to fit your part with what else is going on by ear alone you'll blow it. By the same token, do listen attentively, but don't let what your colleagues are doing lead you astray.
Consider buying Freddie Fennell's Mercury Living Presence recording of Posy with the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Good album to have anyway, and an excellent rendition of the piece.

Especially with that movement, it is CRUCIAL to watch the conductor. If you do that, half of your problem is solved.
Think of 2.5/4 as 5/8 and 1.5/4 as 3/8. The eighth stays constant. And I'll say it again...WATCH! and listen too, but WATCH THE CONDUCTOR!!!
Good luck. Make the best of this, Lincolnshire Posy is a great piece! Takes a good group to pull this one off and give it the justice it deserves.

Are the time signatures actually written as 2.5/4 and 1.5/4?
