Charles Bay

Could anyone kindly give me an appreciation of the Charles Bay mouthpiece? Here in Paris, we do not have the variety of American MPs I keep reading about on the bulletin board. But my local store has started stocking the Charles Bay mps at just over the double the price of Van Dorens. I'm wondering if the difference is justified, and I'm tempted to try a couple out. I presently play a Vandoren B45, with either a Rovner or an Oleg ligature, depending on the reed. Does anyone know what would be approximately the equivalent facing on a CB?

Some people love 'em, some don't. But you knew I'd say that!

Try them out - and see if they're worth twice the price to you. That's really the only way.

As to facings, bore, whatever - after spending a few days with Jim Pyne and having Jim explain to me all the different parameters that go into the mouthpieces, I'd not worry about which facing was which. Try each and every model for a while. Doesn't cost you anything but time to try them, and you may find that a facing significantly different than what you use now will work like a champ on a different manufacturers' mouthpiece.

When I bought a Patricola "A" from Charles Bay, he threw in one of his mouthpieces. I choose the MO-M from the three he gave me to try. It was good timing since my old mouthpiece had warped and was tough to find reeds that didn't chirp. At first I didn't like the Bay, but when I adjusted the type of reed to a thicker, harder size than I was using, I liked it very well. And, when I saw the prices being charged for them, I really really liked it! The tone quality is fine for the orchestra playing I do with enough warmth and projection and the intonation works well for me. It was a big improvement from the old Sumner I was using. I agree with Mark C. that you just have to try every kind you can get your hands on to find what works for you.

I am one of the ones that love the Bay mouthpieces. I tried several Bay's before landing on the one I currently play. Good solid characteristics all the way around...Tone, projection, response, dynamics, quality, etc. I have a MO-L facing and use a Rico Grand Concert Thick Select Blank #3.5.

Almost "any" mouthpiece that gives you greater confidence is worth it...whether it is an expensive student or a hand faced custom (IMHO). Usual disclaimer, your actual milage may vary, i.e. what works well for one person, may be junk to another. Give 'em a try!

I use a Charles Bay Mouthpiece. I love it. The sound it gives me is solid, focused. I could tell instantly when I first tried it that it was what I needed. Besides a sound improvment, I was able to improve much on my articulation in precision, cleanliness and speed. While my speed is not that great, it gets the job done for the music I play. They are expensive. Of course, you must try it before you by. As has been said by all, what works for one may not work for another. Our mouths are all different.

Good luck.
