Did not intend to start a new thread for this, but I wanted those interested to be able to see the parts I will be using for the performance. Notice that I did not say the notes I will be playing. Who knows what will come out of my horn that night. [wink] In any case, those are the same notes that will be in front of me. :)

The performance is free and open to the public and should be listed on the calendar on the right-side of this page.

The attached GIFs are the parts I will be using when I play on the 5th. If you can make it, I would love to meet you after the performance.

Take care,

Robert -

Great stuff! The 6-flats part does lie amazingly well. If it's recorded, please consider making it available. I really want to hear how you do the parts where the violin has those "crunches" in the low register and then glissandos up into the stratosphere. [hot]

The Saraste is certainly a wonderful piece of music. I hope your arrangement does it justice. Yes, I'll also be dying to hear the performance if it is recorded.

Yes, it was recorded but I do not think I will make it available. Simply put, the performance was not to standard that I would put it up. I was pleased in some respects considering the circumstances of the performance and the preparation time allowed for it. But as I teased in the days following the performance, "I think I will go ahead and finish learning the piece." [right]

If I remember correctly, I might be able to put the slow portion up for you to hear. Again, it is NOT how I would want to play it since the conductor was too unfamiliar with the music to properly lay the accompaniment for it. It will not be until next week that I can get a copy of the performance. I will let you all know then.

The audience was very kind and the performance was well received with half of the audience standing at the end. If anyone here was there, they will understand when I say, "The audience was very kind...." [wink]

Now to rest. :-)

Congradulations on the performance. I can only guess that it must have taken quite a brave soul to perform in front of a large audience a piece that is considered one of the biggest bravado technical showcases for violin, but on a wind instrument.

What's even more is that you did not take an easy route, id est completely taking apart Gypsy Airs and and rewriting it to suit the clarinet. Rather, you tried to keep it as close to the violin part as possible, which of course makes the playing that much more difficult. That's a very admirable thing to do.

I want to try and persuade you to make the recording available. I can't speak for others, but I am really interested in listening to how a violin masterpiece as Gypsy Airs would sound on clarinet. It is not so much your clarinet playing that interests me. So I could care less if it even is a horrible, novice-like performance, which I'm sure it's not.

If you decide to not make the entire piece available, please do consider emailing the file to just me at kefeizhang@gmail.com

Robert - I second Kevin's sentiments ... you can get my email via Mark or GBK.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Well, a performance that's put up on the web stays there forever. I'd ony do it for something I felt was up to snuff. I think the best solution is what Robert proposes -- post the part that went well and wait until a really good performance to make the complete piece available.

I will post the parts that are decent and privately send the rest to those who ask.

I will not be able to request a copy of the recording until Monday and then I will edit it once it is made for me.

I'll let you all know.

Okay. Please be gentle. [right]

http://www.musix4me.com and navigate to the Music page.

Zigeunerweisen is on there. I only slightly doctored it and you will be able to tell where. I tried to keep it true to the score so you would have the entire piece, though a couple small repeats are missing in the early fast section.

I know it's not perfect and I know I can do better when the next time comes around. I'm just happy it went as well as it did considering the circumstances. I'm also grateful I've had the opportunities like this that I have.

Hope you all enjoy. It is a great piece and when I finish entering the parts, cleaning the arrangement (will be a nearly new arrangement when I'm finished) I will make it available via Scorch on my website. You will be able to print out the score and clarinet part there. May be a while though.

Not to be off topic, but out of curiousity how do you pronounce that beastly word? Thanks.

Elizabeth,

I'm not too sure how to pronounce it, but given the German propensity for wrapping enormous philosophical concepts within the confines of a single word (i.e. Schadenfreude), the word might mean "Inner angst from performing 32nd notes on a Bb instrument in the key of e-flat minor." [grin]

BTW, Robert, I just had a listen....very impressive! You are to be commended for tackling such a challenging piece....

"schadenfreude" isn't an enormous philosophical concept; it simply means finding joy in other people's misery.

as for pronunciation, something like: "Tsi-goy-ner-vyz-en" (looks yiddish) - also good for counting in 5. I think it means gypsy style - another one of those enormous philosophical concepts.

People are generous and kind and I want to say thank you, I appreciate your kind words. It would not make sense to post a thank you everytime someone says something nice, so please accept this thank you. I do sincerely appreciate the attention everyone has given this.

Take care,

Not to defer the attention away from Robert's fine performance, but I thought everyone (including Robert) may be curious to hear another live clarinet recording of Sarasate's violin showpiece.

It is played by a 19 year old clarinetist, on the radio show from the top. A real audio stream is available on this page:
http://www.fromthetop.org/Radio/performers.cfm?pid=1949

And for those curious about the pronunciation, Zigeunerweisen is said several times during the interview following.

Robert ... bravo ... sorry, it's taken me a while to pull my finger out and listen. Enjoy it very much, slight blemishes make a performance for me (meaning I purchase "live" music in preference to studio recorded music). Well done. Also, you're orchestration is very, very good. Nice supporting playing.

p.s. - love the picture "friends" on your website!
