Hello all, please clarify for me if I am doing something wrong, it regards to playing string bass parts on my EEb contra-alto.
After going through the trick of changing key signature (add 3 sharps or delete 3 flats) and reading the bass clef as treble clef, do I then transpose the notes down an octave to actually sound in the string bass range if this is my intention?
I figure the reason is that string bass part is written an octave higher (i.e. cello range) than it actually sounds when played. Therefore, if I hadn’t transposed the notes down an octave, I would be playing in the cello range (whose notes are written as sounded). But if I wanted to play in the string bass range (an octave below cello), I should further transpose down an octave to sound properly.
In the same logic, if I wanted to play the cello or bassoon part and to sound in that range, then no such transposition is needed. However, if I wanted to play the contrabassoon part, then the situation would be the same as cello/string bass.
Am I making any sense? Am I making a mistake here? Appreciate any input.
Willy

Willy, you're spot on.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
