 Improv.. Any tricks?

I just had a concert with our high school jazz band and the schedualed soloist didn't show up... Hmmmm... well our band director told me to do an improv. well i did.. and it stunk. So is there any real trick to improvisation on the clarinet.. i can do it find on the bass guitar.. but it just feels different on the clarinet..
