Your dad's right.
Your cheeks should be kept in. You might feel that you get more power because puffing your cheeks might let more reed vibrate in your mouth. Try taking a tiny bit more mouthpiece in your mouth. This might give you the same result. But keep your cheeks in!

Back in the dark ages, when I was starting on clarinet, our band director stressed not puffing out your cheeks. Anyone seen puffing out their cheeks was called a "pickle puss" as a reminder.

I seem to remember that Dizzy's cheek puffing was the result of some failure of the muscle structure in his cheeks. Most people can't puff their cheeks to the extreme degree that he could. I also don't think he had a choice of puffing or not puffing.

Puffed cheeks make it much more difficult to control the embouchure. This is turn makes it difficult to control the tone quality.
While one does want a reasonable amount of power out of the clarinet, it is not intended to be a power instrument and you should not be trying to compete with a sax or trumpet for maximum volume.

NO PUFFED CHEEKS! BAD BOY! Although I do try to compete with the sax and trumpet for maximum volume... It's sad, because I can never be as loud as them :(!!!!! First of all with puffed cheeks, although you may get more sound you get a bad tone quality... AND TONE IS #1!!! And it looks weird and sounds bad... ok, that's all I have to say....
