The NYOC is in the midst of its 2004 tour, and I heard them perform last night. This is a very accomplished group of young musicians, who handle viruostic work (Stravinsky's Petrouchka) and complex ensemble playing with equal poise and flair. This year's repetoire has a strong component of 20th century works and Canadian compositions (such as Hetu's Images de la Revolution).
If more need be said, Russell Dagon on this year's training session faculty!
For those Canadians who follow this BB (and for anyone who is close to any of the cities noted below), I strongly recommend giving the NYOC a listen. This year's tour is moving West to East, and the cities they will perform in between now and mid-month are: Regina, Winnipeg, Kenora, Sault Ste. Marie, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.
The NYOC's slogan is "Launching the next generation" (of orchestral players) and I think hearing this group will convince you that the slogan is appropriate.
