Ok,
I am doing a recital with the Brahms Sonata No. 1/ Time Pieces by Muczynski, and Cappriccio for A clarinet. Does anyone know of any good resources that I could use in order to come up with program notes for these pieces. I know that Brahms came out of retirement to write the clarinet pieces for a specific clarinet player, but aside from that, I don't know very much.
Thanks

Brahms wrote all his clarinet pieces for Richard Muehlfeld (more correctly spelt M u-umlaut - h - l ....). Search Google for Brahms and assorted spellings and misspellings of Muehlfeld and you'll find quite a lot.
Please do not, however, believe the claim (previously found on woodwind.org) that Schumann was present at the first performance. Clara Schumann maybe, but Robert Schumann had been dead for decades.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.
To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Maybe this is too obvious, but may I suggest a trip to the library? Try to find a large public library or a college/university library with a large music section. Search for biographies of the composers, look in the New Grove Dictionary of Music, books on clarinet repertoire and general genre books (e. g. "Chamber Music of the 20th Century"). You should find plenty. I don't recommend Google very highly- you might find good stuff but you'll also find lots of $#&*@.
