 G. Langenus Mouthpiece
Author: Roger Aldridge

A clarinet buddy of mine loaned me two Langenus mouthpieces. He described how he has a drawer full of 50-year old clarinet mouthpieces. I've been very interested in the work of Langenus. Thus, it was a joy to try out these mouthpieces. They play very well and have excellent projection. But, overall, I still prefer a Morgan RM15. Interestingly, my friend uses a Morgan RM06.

I'm curious if anyone on the forum could give me some background information about the Langenus mouthpiece. It's a "signature" mouthpiece with a marking of G. Langenus, Inc USA. Did Langenus have his own company or were the mouthpieces produced as a line by another company? Any idea about when they could have been made?

These mouthpieces have a larger chamber than what I typically see with current production mouthpieces. However, the Morgan chamber appears to the eye to be larger and more A-shaped than the Langenus.

Thanks! Roger

Is that a so-called "duckbill" mp?

Yes, the Langenus has what I'd describe as a duckbill mouthpiece beak. However, to my eye a Morgan has even more of a pronounced duckbill.

G. Langenus, principal clarinetist with the New York Symphony was one of the most important clarinetists in the world. He was much involved in the transition to the Boehm system--rearranging teaching method, as well as developing clarinet and mouthpiece design. He was idolized by Benny Goodman who used a Langenus mouthpiece throughout his carreer. The mouthpieces can be superb, but they are different from what most people are used to and their quality is often overlooked. Clarinets that bear his name rank with the best made at the time, but they are quite rare.

Apparently the duckbill has a fault line, of fragile nature.

Or did they come from the factory with the tips glued on at an angle?

i just bought a lot of old clarinet mpcs and in the lot are 2 g langenus mpcs. i tried them both and one is a dud but the other -holy cow . this is a mpcs! easy the best clarinet mpc i have ever played. this is a game changer. the duckbill allows for easy double lip if you want. this i would never thought possiable . i was double lipping in no time. the other mpc could most likely be brought back to life with a good reface. i cant believe no one else bid on the mpc lot as it contained a bunch of really good mpcs besides the glangenus .

I also bought a GW Langenus, no box with no identifiable markings. It truly meets my needs for a Selmer Q center tone. Big and robust and easy to play

I remember, I played one once that a lady in a band I played in had. I thought it was fantastic as well...I wonder if anyone out there knows if Langenus played double lip? Why else would he have a duckbill like that?

Yes, Langenus used the double lip embouchure and promoted it among his students.

Langenus was Belgian. FWIW, I have a Langenus mouthpiece and I find it absolutely excellent for use with certain clarinets.
