George Crumb, especially if I have a score to look at.
There are more, but their names all escape me at the moment.
Don't know if I'd call John Williams "modern", but if we're talking film composers, put Howard Shore and Danny Elfman on my list.

I could listen to most of Eric Whitacre's music all day. If you've never heard the piece "October" written for band, you're really missing out!

I honestly think that the most original compositions of John Williams happend many years ago I think he's starting to slip up a little but take into account this is my opinion.

Imant Raminsh
I had the great pleasure of playing his "Gloria" for orchestra and chorus last summer. He attended the performance. In spite of the fact that it was hardly a polished performance (we only had a week) he was very gracious in his appreciation.

rebell96 - isn't Messiaen just sublime? His incredible tonal pallet and highly defined sense of orchestrational craftsmanship are constantly overwhelming (to me at least). I also adore his organ music.
