I am trying to find some background on a CB ebonite 3 star clarinet, S/N 1046E. There is a lot of info on the site about metal versions, but none that I can find on ebonite versions. Does anyone have any info or can point me in the right direction?

To the best of my knowledge, Harry Bettoney [or as Cundy Bettoney] made many clarinets in the time period from about 1900-10? to maybe 1950, and wrote/collaborated in [early] 1940+ Woodwind Magazine articles on cls etc. I have seen/played/owned a number of the metals like the Silva Bet, 3 Star etc. Jim Lande [and a few others] are expert here. I have an early wood, a USN[avy] likely between the WWs, will look for a ser #, and wouldn't be surprised that he/they made hard rubber [ebonITE] cls as well. I'm sure that this history is recorded some where. I'll look into my and our library's reference books. OTHERS, HELP, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

Bettoney really pushed metal metal clarinets in the late 20s and early 30s. I assume that ebonite is something like bakelite and other early plastics, or possible some varient of hard rubber. As Don notes, they were pretty much gone by 1950. The 3 star was a model name for student models -- at least in their metal line.
