Don't you have any broken-in reeds you can use for all-region?
Perhaps you should try buying a box of 3 1/2 (3 3/4? what brand?) rather than delving into reed sanding right before a big event.

Try silicon carbide abrasive paper, 300 or 400 grit size. Silicon carbide paper works best for almost any sanding work as it is almost as hard as diamonds. It is inexpensive and single sheets are often found in tool or hardware stores. It is great for softening reeds. Good luck!

Mr. Jack Brymer's book "The Clarinet" (Yehudi Menuhin Music Guides Series) has a chapter on reeds in which he explains which spots on the reed to work on (to sand, that is), and the expected results.

For a beginning reed-sander-adjuster, I'd suggest softening [only] too hard reeds by sanding ONLY the reed [flat] backs using SiC [emery] paper/cloth as Wes suggested. I use 400 for most wood removal, and finish using 6 or 800 grit to "polish". I usually select reeds to soften by looking "through" them toward a light or sunlite, to judge if their "scrape" is quite uniform, so as to not need "scrape" retouching. Works for me! Luck, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don
