My clarinet teacher just moved to Florida, but before leaving suggested I find a new teacher among a professional symphony. However, he did not have any contacts in my area (I live in central PA, the closest city is Pittsburgh) I was wondering how to go about getting in touch with one of the musicians in a major Pittsburgh orchestra. Most of my friends (other instruments) who take lessons with musicians of this caliber went to them directly through former teachers or other contacts, but I don't have any. Also, I want to know if they'd be willing to teach me. I'm going into my junior year of high school. I'm not a child prodigy or anything, but I'm fairly good, and really want to get better as much as possible. Would someone from a professional orchestra (in general) be willing to take me even though I'm not absolutely incredible at this point? I have a temporary teacher right now, so I'm staying "in shape" but would like to make contact asap if possible. Thanks for your help,

Where are you in central PA? Many years ago, I lived in Centre County, and my teacher was on the faculty at Penn State. He's retired now (his name was Ned Deihl), but you may be able to find a teacher through the university if you're anywhere near it. I just looked at their web page, and their current clarinet professor is named Smith Toulson. I'd suggest contacting the music department at Penn State at at least asking for recommendations.

If you are near Pitt, check out the local colleges and see if there is someone on staff that may have an opening. Check out Carnegie Mellon and Duquesene(sp?). If you are looking for someone from the Pittsburgh Sym, I would recommend Michael Rusinek. He is on faculty at both of the aforementioned schools.

If you're near pittsburgh, the professional clarinetists I know are Michael Rusinek, Ron Samuels, Jack Howel, Richard Page and Thoman Thompson. I don't know if they would be willing to teach someone is HS...and you might want to look into their prices for lessons. They all might recommend some of their grad students for you to study with as well. I am currently a student at Duquesne, and am a student of Rusinek. I could probably get you in contact with some of these people. Email me and we'll chat.
If you're more in the center of the state, try looking into the Harrisburgh Symphony players.
PA is so hard cause all the cities are so spread out! I understand what you're going through.
