OK. I'm ignorant. What's up with mouthpieces that play either 440hz or 442hz? Why would I want a 442hz mouthpiece?

Probably if you played in europe. I personally would look at one if for some reason I always seem to play a little flat, but would only try it if I didn't have the money for a new mouthpiece AND barrel and if I needed a new mouthpiece anyway. I'd look into them. It's easier to make yourself play flatter by pulling out, but if the barrels all the way in, what can you do? Well I know what I'd do. A shorter barrel, or a higher pitched mouthpiece.

442 is become more of a choice out there. Many many conservatories and major orchestra's are tunning higher. There is some debate to why and if it is really a wise move. Here in Chicago it's about half and half, the CSO tunes higher, sometimes you find a piano is at 442 or 440 or even 444. Personally I love playing at 442. It's much more comfortable though for some reason to play with a really dark tone at that pitch level seems to get more difficult.

I think, in general, the higher the pitch, the harder it is to achieve a darker tone. Compare similar instruments. A tenor vs alto or soprano sax, an Bb clarinet vs a C clarinet, vs the Eb clarinet, flute vs piccalo, etc. So it seems to be a general pattern/theme to this.

True, but then I guess the german bore has more to do with the darkness of the sound than the pitch.

But why would anyone want to tune using a different standard in the first place? What's wrong with 440hz?

I truly doubt the size of the bore of the clarinet has much to do with the darkness of the tone of the instrument or not.
I tend to think the mouthpiece and the way the player blows has the greatess effect on how the instrument sounds...
Also I have seen a number of players mean different things by dark bright etc. Focus and colour of tone are a number of different things...
The Vienna clarinets sure do sound dark, and yet they tune really high.
When I saw Boulez conduct Mahler 6 I found the the whole Vienna Phil wind secton to have a "dark" covered tone.

Great observation!, Bob S ! I measure my mps, from tip to end of body, NOT tenon. Several vary from 70 to 73 mm, and in length only will cause diffs in pitch!! Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

The human brain, is mostly made of what amounts to anti-freeze.
The largest constituents (proteins, fats, gristle, old baseball stats) are fatty acids and other lipids on the working surfaces that pass neurotransmitters.
The brain is far more efficient as a radiator of excess heat than in processing higher cognitive functions (measure the amount of calories consumed vs. thermal output)...
Not so much a computer as a regulatory system enclosing a fundamental program that is part of the BiOS.
