 No More Lessons

I am so bummed because I can't afford lessons anymore right now. I had to put them on hold. So...I keep chugging forward on my own until financial situations change. Wish me luck!

It's often difficult to decide what our priorities are, R'bo. You cetainly have yours, as we all do. Private lessons, for me, would fall into the 'as I'm able to afford' category - not a necessity. As long as you don't give up entirely you should be okay. I feel you'll be all right but, just for good measure, I wish you luck too.

Keep on Tootin' :)

or for others private clarinets lessons go with the thought of "oh well I guess I will just have to skip lunch and perhaps dinner from now on". If you want it bad enough you can get it.

Times are tough and nothing brings that home more than giving up something you love. Just remember to maintain your current level of expertise by being alittle harder on yourself while practicing so you wouldn't be prone to slip into "sloppy" habits.

Good Luck!!!!!!

Thanks all. It stinks, but it was an easy decision to make. It was between paying the mortgage and feeding my daughter or playing the horn. I can still play the horn and I can still improve if I am hard on myself. Hell, did Louis even have lessons on his horn?

Yes, from the great "King" Oliver.

Have you ever tried to record yourself playing? When I can't see my teacher and I'm stumped with something, I do it. It's great way to catch mistakes you might otherwise miss - espcially rhythmic ones. Also a great way to get the overall effect of what you're doing, which can be hard to do while you're playing! Hope you can get back to your lessons soon!

Cyso, I don't agree with you, but... to each his own opinion - I guess. I would never advise someone to do something that may jeopardize their health and Rockymountainbo is certainly not self-centered enough to do so.

Mark, your comment is a good reminder to me. I think Louis was a lifelong learner. I also don't believe he skipped too many lunches on purpose and not much, if anything, musically, got past him. Personally speaking, I can never thank all the fellow musicians enough, whatever instrument they played primarily, who helped me in the past. Sometimes I wish I could go back and visit them and distribute heartfelt 'thank you hugs' to each and every one. I firmly believe I learned as much from peers as I did from teachers. It's just that teachers are more efficient with the time and teaching methods. With peers it's been a little here and a little there. Either way, it adds up to your own motivation to learn... whoever and wherever the source.

Rockymountainbo, you have the Motivation and Character to make it work even if it takes more time than you first anticipated. Family and necessities come first. The horn will be there no matter what you do. Stay healthy, Happy Tootin', and best of luck to you.

There is possibly a way you can still get lessons. I know a clarinet teacher who gives "free" lessons to a student, and in return the student cleans his place once a week. This teacher hates losing a good student and will go out of his way to find a way to make an arrangement that works out until the student can pay again. Maybe you have a skill that you can barter for lessons?
