The New Langwell Index is fun for this stuff.
American is a popular name for metal clarinets. Note that not all were actually made in the U.S. and that more than one company used American Artist
Metal clarinets seen on eBay and makers
American Artist William Nuernberger (Germany)
American Artist Progressive Musical Instruments (some in U.S.) American Beauty (U.S.)
American Gloritone Penzel Muller (1899 - p1955) New York (U.S.)
American Made Easy Play
American Perfection
American Standard H. N. White (1895 - 1955(?)) Cleveland (U.S.)
American Student Bohland & Fuchs (Graslitz)
American Victory Progressive Musical Instruments (1920 - 1950) New
York (this mark registered 1937) (U.S.)
Other trade names that may or may have been used for clarinets
American Climax Lyon & Healy (1864-1940) Chicago (U.S.)
American Conservatory Lyon & Healy (1864-1940) Chicago (U.S.)
American Prep Wm. Frank (1910 - 1950) Chicago (U.S.)
American Professional Lyon & Healy (1864-1940) Chicago (U.S.)
American Star Lyon & Healy (1864-1940) Chicago (U.S.)
Artist (Sears) E.K. Blessing (1910-1950) Elkhart (U.S.)
I have seen American Knight metal clarinets on eBay, but I don't know the maker, and I have not seen one recently. It almost certainly was sold as a student quality. If you could send pix, I might could guess who made it, but probably not. Might play fine for marching band, outdoors, etc.
