Who actually makes the woodwind brand of clarinets, saxes, and flutes that the Woodwind & Brasswind sell? The have a preety braod range of Bb, A,C,and Eb clarinets, as well as a complete family of saxes (excpet bass and Sopranino) and two student flute modles. I was interested in the Eb clarinet which is made of wood that looks interesting and the price is excellent. But, how good are these instrumnets anyway? Are they made in the USA? Thanks in advance-Corey

Corey,
The name 'Woodwind Company' may be a Leblanc name. Go to the site
http://www.gleblanc.com and look at the bottom of the page.
I know someone who plays a 'woodwind company' Eb soprano. He sounds good and he says he likes it.

The Woodwind Company is now owned by Leblanc. However, Kalmen Opperman has told me that before Chedeville mouthpieces became available, most symphony clarinetists used Woodwind mouthpieces, almost always touched up by refacers. I think these predate the Steel Ebonite models.
I'm not sure when the Steel Ebonite trademark came in, but it lasted at least through the 1950s or early 60s. Steel Ebonite mouthpieces were made of good rubber and have a decent reputation, though the ones I've played have had too much resistance for me. A pristine dealer's demo set with about a dozen facings brought a bundle on eBay a couple of years ago.
Woodwind mouthpieces regularly come up on eBay. Since the Steel Ebonite ones at least 40 years old, almost all have significant wear. I'd never bid on one without trying it, or getting a no questions asked money back guarantee.
Best regards.

Is the Woodwind Company that makes mouthpieces now for LeBlanc ( although they have started a new line under the LeBlanc USA name i have read) the same company that makes the instruments for WWBW?
It doesnt seem like they are one in the same to me. Just wondering..........

I have several OLDER Woodwind mps, yes they, along with O'Brien's glass/crystals. and Conn's were then the principal US makers. The WW G8 [for my Bb sops] and B6[for my A] I have are still very good. Wasn't The Steel[ite] Ebonite a Conn trademark, cant recall?? I visited their 2nd story ?workshops? off BRDY in NYC in the early '50's, to get them to reface several mps, which played better in my poor judgement! I dont recall any cl,etc mfgr. they did, my semi-educated guesswork is that they, like others then, contracted with Bettoney, Pruefer, Pedler, Conn? to make stencil horns for their marketing. Pretty competitive with French makers at that time!! Others please help, memory "insecure". Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

I believe the Woodwind Co. that is under Leblanc is a different company from the one that produces instruments under the name Woodwind & Brasswind.
