The season is upon us. Drumbeats rattling through the stillness of the morning . Remembrances' over the second cup of coffee, and my "brides' recollection of trying to march in cornfields while playing--or trying to play--a trumpet. What has triggered this thread? For the past two weeks the Bass Clarrinet page has been swamped by the more assertive pundits considerations on marching with a Bass Clarinet. Does it have any musical merit or is it a masochistic rite of passage? Pundits on both sides of the aisle have responded, and responded and responded.
Rural kids are at a disadvantage/advantage in their musical upbringing. The various Boards of Eduction in our area are looking for ways to slash the budgets. Is this extract from the Fort Dodge Messenger a veiled attempt to cover a budget deficit or a real compassionate statement by a concerned Band Director?
“Storm Lake, Iowa.
Tired of stepping in horse manure the Storm Lake High School marching band will not under any circumstances march in this year’s Star Spangled Spectacular Fourth of July parade.
We aren’t going to do it’ Band Director Frank Hoskins said Wednesday. ‘Maybe they’ll get the message. Either put the horses at the back or don’t put us in back of the horses.’
The Star Spangled Spectacular Parade has been the centerpiece of the Independence Day weekend for the past 25 years in this northwest Iowa town of 10,000...........
‘......The kids are trying to watch their music and stay in line. They can’t play if they’re watching their feet. One kid slipped and almost fell down. I said that was enough........’ ”
Comments please? As one little fellow said following our St. Paddy's Parade, "I'm glad they threw the candy before the horses came."
