Been playing for several years - can't believe I just found this board !!!
I've been using Vandoren V12 3.5 for quite a while and want to fool around with some new reeds (sure sign your hooked). I've heard that these reeds are quite good, but difficult to match with Vandoren's 1-5 rating. Should I start with Gonzales 3.5 ? Any suggestions ?
Thanks !

I would try a 3.75. If the 3.5's play with ease to you. If they are "just right" after breaking in, then I'd go 3.5 in FOF.

sfalexi is correct.
Many players feel that if you are a V12 player, the equivalent Gonzalez FOF reed will either be the same or 1/4 strength higher.
Thus, try both the 3.5 and the 3.75 in the Gonzalez FOF.
One reed break in tip: Gonzalez reeds must be broken in very slowly. It will take a number of days (at least 5 or more) to find out exactly what you have, and what adjustments (if any) are needed. As tempting as it may be, do not make any adjustments until this initial period is over and the reed has finally stabilized. You will be surprised in the difference between your initial test on Day 1 and when the break-in is completed on Days 5 -7...GBK

I had a different experience with Gonzalez reeds. My reed of choice is a V12 3.5. I ordered a box of 3.5 Gonazlez and found them a bit too stiff for my liking. Also, my teacher who likes either v12 4.0 or the stiffest reeds out of a box of V12 3.5, liked my Gonzalez reeds very much. One thing I was impressed with was consistency. Every reed I tried out of the Gonzalez box seemed identical to all the others. I'm going to try another box and am debating whether I should get a 3.0 or 3.25.
